It’s Always Sunny in Texas and Cali

January was a time of adventure for Melinated Moms. Last weekend, we found ourselves in the heart of Houston and Dallas, Texas and this past weekend we were in the surprisingly chilly city of  San Francisco, California. Take a look at everywhere we went and all the things we did along the way.

Dallas, Texas

Our first stop was in Dallas, Texas where we met our fiscal sponsor, Black Ladies in Public Health (BLiPH). This weekend retreat was full of deep conversations, connections, karaoke, and most importantly, the crab broil; it was so good Jaye had to bring it back to Jersey with her! Together Melinated Moms as been able to grow with BLiPH increase their capacity to do more for  communities of color with professionals of color.

“Our approach to achieving health equity requires a conscious awakening that centers a social justice framework.”. – BLiPH

Houston, Texas

We then found ourselves in Houston, Texas… all in the same week by the way. We attended a Melinated Moms member baby shower and we made sure to give her all that Melinated Moms had to offer: we’re talking Love 2 Dream Baby swaddles, a custom MM Bathrobe, and her hospital bag for her to get ready for delivery!

Our final stop was 10 stars across the board. We attended the California Breast Feeding Conference. California is known for being on of the top 3 states for black maternal health, and this conference proved that. In the three days we were met with so much intentional diversity and inclusivity. Topics spanned from the integration of diversity and culture of other populations, such as the Native Indigenous, Asian diaspora,  Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander populations. We are able to see Melinated Moms one being an organization with a large global out reach.

One of our best highlights was connecting with Kimberly Seals Allers (the fly lady with the awesome skirt in the picture). She is the Founder of the Irth App. Irth is a revolutionary app to identify how health inequities are showing up in Black Maternal Health. Are you a mom who is currently pregnant or recently gave birth in the last 2 years? Download the app and share your pregnancy and birthing experience. This app is a “yelp-like” review space for moms and birthing people to express their experiences to create accountability, transparency and empower moms to be change agents for improving health equity in Black Maternal Health.
